Zombie apocalypses have been a staple of pop culture ever since George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. It's a little wonder then that there have been a whole lot of games about zombies digging out of their graves and coming out to eat your brains. Of course, your primary objective in most of these games is not get your brain eaten while simultaneously blowing undead brains out with whatever piece of weaponry on hand. Left 4 Dead is the latest in the genre and it is definitely the best one yet. Choosing from four characters to play, you pretty much have to just run through a gauntlet of zombies to get from point A to point B. The fun part is that the characters you don't choose become your teammates – either controlled by the AI or a handy buddy on LAN or on the server. Cooperative game play is pretty much unique for this game – a concept that probably has other game developers going, “Why didn't I think of that?” The AI for your teammates is actually pretty good and you can finish the game going single-player, though half the fun in multi-player is shouting you need help from your teammates across the room. Help is what you'll definitely need since the AI for the enemies is also pretty brutal; the game also features an AI Director that randomizes the levels and pretty much tailors the difficulty for you. All these combined make one of the best games released in 2008. Go buy it.
